Independent developer Visual Art Studio has released a demo of Hamster on rails for Steam NextFest. We checked it!
The adorable puzzle adventure game Hamster on rails caught our eye, so we decided to give it a try. Take a journey through a hamster’s village as you help build an efficient rail network to collect minerals, open chests and help fellow hamsters.
According to Visual Art Studio, players will travel a total of 64 stages through four different worlds. We only got to sample a handful of stages, but the ones we played were decidedly cute and looked very promising for the full release.
The demo starts with a tutorial with our hamster friend. It introduces the basic concepts of the game – placing rails on tiles, turning rails, demolishing rails, and manipulating the camera. They introduce new parts to assemble our rail network, starting with straight and curved parts, then adding angled parts.
In total, there are eight different pieces. Also, all coins have a limited number that you can use. So it’s up to you to find the right combination. It seems simple enough at first, but once you take into account the limits of the number of coins available to you, it forces you to rethink your strategy.
As mentioned earlier, you’ll collect items along the way such as minerals and chests. Chests are optional; If you find a chest and connect it to your rail network, you’ll unlock new skins to customize your hamster friend. There are also optional side tasks such as collecting a pickaxe for another hamster in the scene.
Globally, Hamster on rails is fun and unique enough for us to watch. You can experience the demo for yourself and list the game on Steam.
