DBT-NBRC develops “SWADESH” multimodal brain imaging data and analyzes


The DBT-National Brain Research Center (DBT-NBRC) recently developed the SWADESH project, a unique brain initiative focused on certified neuroimaging, neurochemical and neuropsychological data and analyzes that are made available to researchers for the management of disorders. cerebral. SWADESH is the first large-scale multimodal neuroimaging database designed specifically for the Indian population with big data architecture and analyzes for various disease categories (Fig. 1) under one platform.

SWADESH was inaugurated by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Office) at the Ministry of Science and Technology on November 19, 2021.

Strengthen research on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and help the scientific community to propose promising treatments. SWADESH offers a big data architecture that manages and analyzes six modules, namely neurodegenerative [AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Parkinson’s disease (PD)], neuropsychiatric (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), neurodevelopmental (autism and epilepsy), disorders related to COVID-19, other disorders and healthy subjects.

SWADESH is supported by the JAVA and Python based workflow environment. Supported by a dedicated storage system, it provides quality control, data analysis reports and data backups. Its development will facilitate multi-site data integration and collaborative research around the world. Currently, SWADESH has data from 500 AD and MCI patients and 70 PD patients. It also includes data on 600 healthy elderly people and 800 healthy young people in the control group.

DBT-NBRC has developed several clinical research tools through SWADESH. The GAURI system uses adaptive pattern recognition and learning schemes for simple or differential predictive diagnosis, designed with MRI modalities and neuropsychological batteries. NINS-STAT is a state-of-the-art automated statistical test selection and execution software package, highly applicable in clinical research. KALPANA is an integrative package for visualization, preprocessing and quantification of MRS data. PRATEEK analyzes multimodal neuroimaging data that minimizes the need for expertise in managing different neuroimaging tools for multimodal data processing and analysis. Integrated Stimulus Synchronization Module (STEM) includes a versatile paradigm design system, presentation system, and real-time participant response collection system for MRI-related functional purposes, mapping brain activity non-invasively in normal health and clinical evaluation of various brain disorders. Dr Mandal’s team at DBT-NBRC then launched BHARAT, a big data analysis model for early diagnostic biomarkers of AD. The design included a Hadoop-based big data framework integrating MRI, MRS and neuropsychological test results. The team is working to expand the project to include rich multimodal neuroimaging datasets for healthy and diseased cases.
